My very own website!!! Yikes!

Home learning week 2

So, week 2 of home learning is now complete (take a look at how we got on in week one).
I have included a few website links that I have used this week and hope you will find them useful.
Emotions have been a lot closer to the surface for all of us this week so I took the decision to cancel any ‘work’ on Friday to give us all a break.
Luckily the weather has been nice enough to spend lots of time outside!

The plan versus the reality:
MONDAY
30.03.2020
9.15-10.00
English: handwriting, spellings, write a meal review (end project 2)
I didn’t dare get them to review an actual meal I’d served! So they imagined they had visited the restaurants they’d designed last week
10.00-10.15
Break
10.15-11.00
Maths: Mathletics, Times Table Rockstars, work out the cost of yesterday’s meals and calorie count
We just worked on the first two. Meanwhile Zach discovered a website that he is now obsessed with and plays on several times a day: https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/5-7-years/addition-and-subtraction
11-1
Meal prep, lunch and relax
1-3
Project 3: human body a) major organs b) digestion c) respiration and circulation d) teeth e) eyes and ears f) fighting disease g) skin and bones *I anticipate we will cover 2-3 of these this week and return to it later on
We watched some videos to get us thinking about our bodies and how they work. https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/class-clips-video/biology-ks2-ks3-journey-through-the-digestive-system/zr33wty https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/class-clips-video/science-ks2-how-our-circulatory-system-keeps-us-alive/zhf76v4 https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/class-clips-video/science-ks2-how-do-muscles-and-bones-work/zfgtscw
Then Matthew and Anya labelled the bones of the body and the major organs.

Once again, we split this every day with half in the morning and half at the end of the working day
TUESDAY
31.03.2020
9.15-10
English: project 1: write a story about a being in hospital, or being a germ, or a doctor shrunk to go inside a human body, or a coronavirus themed newspaper article
Matthew chose to write about coronavirus and Anya wrote a story about a girl breaking her arm and leg
10-10.15
Break
10.15-11
Maths/Science: project 3: organ weight size comparison, try to find weight of different items e.g. 300g for a heart
OMG I never imagined that the kids would be SOOOOO excited about weighing items around the house. We were so involved I missed the Skype call with my mum and dad!

I used this site to find out average organ weight: https://www.sciencefocus.com/the-human-body/top-10-what-are-the-heaviest-organs-in-the-human-body/

PE with Joe
This was the only part of the schedule we completed today. Instead we got lots of toys out, made brownies and shortbread (linked to our cafe project) and banned screen time entirely from 9am to 4pm even during breaks.

So as you can see, a much more varied week as we were more relaxed with our routine and sessions were shorter to try to keep some positivity.
I intend to do some spelling and times tables practice over  the two weeks of Easter holiday. How have you been getting on and what do you plan for Easter?

  1. As like last week, I’m so impressed by how you are handling home learning. Our little ones school has solidly planned each day of ‘home school’ for us, so it’s very structured from 9-3.30pm as a general rule. But we are trying to throw in baking and creative bits and bobs as much as possible. #DreamTeamLinky xx

  2. Wow – what a structured timetable. I’m not coping so well homeschooling two kids in two different years at the same time. It’s just too much. Easter break has been just that, a break. School home learning will resume next week.
    #dreamteam

  3. I think the BBC has been a really useful resource during this period with its education site (I’m biased though as a BBC producer). Great to see you’re well settled in to a routine x #DreamTeam

  4. This sounds great. Seems like you have this all under control. I must say I am looking forward to the kids starting schooling again next week as it has been harder to keep everyone occupied during the ‘holidays’ #dreamteamlinky
